Understanding Subprocess

Could someone please tell me what Subprocess is all about. I tried the Subprocess demo apps and searched for online documentations and read General usage, Application structure, Seperate Sub-process executable etc... But i'm still not sure why use seperate executable, what can be achieved with it, what can be other usages with it
