CEF1 Retirement Plan

Postby magreenblatt » Mon May 06, 2013 5:19 pm

Hi All,

After more than 4 years of active development the time has come for us to schedule CEF1's retirement. This decision has not been made lightly but is the inevitable result of progress in the Chromium and CEF communities. CEF3 is now a stable product in use by production-level applications from companies such as Adobe, Google and Intel to name just a few. Chromium is in the midst of significant re-factoring related to Blink integration and we will soon loose test_shell, our single-process WebKit API reference implementation.

Consequently we've decided that the 1453 branch (Chromium 27) will be the last release branch of CEF1. Effective immediately all active development of CEF1, including bug fixes and feature enhancements, will move from trunk to the 1453 branch. Furthermore, we've chosen September 1, 2013 as the date when CEF1 will move from active development to bug-fix-only maintenance mode.

If you are currently using CEF1 and have not yet started a migration plan for CEF3 you are encouraged to do so at this time. CEF developers will be working over the next few months to implement the few remaining features provided by CEF1 that are not yet available in CEF3.

Regards,
Marshall

Some updates to this plan effective immediately:

1. 1.1364.1123 will be the last CEF1 build available from the project Downloads page. Users can continue to build CEF1 from source code as described at BranchesAndBuilding.

2. The CEF development team is no longer spending developer resources on CEF1. All existing CEF1 issues in the issue tracker have been closed with a status of WontFix. Patches contributed from external sources that meet project contribution requirements and fix serious bugs/crashes may still be accepted and merged on a case-by-case basis.

With the addition in the 1547 branch of printing support (issue #505) and search/find support (issue #513) CEF3 should now be functionally equivalent to CEF1 for the majority of users. A work-around is available for response filtering (issue #515) -- see the issue for details. If you are currently using CEF1's modal dialog support (issue #519) you should consider implementing modality in your client application instead.
